Remembering the Tragic Night of August 15, 1975: A Nation's Darkest Chapter

The Tragic Night of August 15, 1975, saw the brutal assassination of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most of his family members by dissident army personnel. Regrettably, this grim incident remains etched as one of the darkest chapters in our nation's history.

In addition to Bangabandhu and his devoted wife, Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatun Nesha Mujib, the horrifying event claimed the lives of 26 other individuals, all part of their extended family and close associates, as reported on the AL website.

Among the martyrs were Bangabandhu's elder son, Sheikh Kamal, his younger son, Sheikh Jamal, as well as his daughters-in-law, Sultana Kamal and Parveen Jamal Rozi. The youngest victim was ten-year-old Sheikh Russell. Other lives lost included Sheikh Abu Nasser, his nephew Sheikh Fazlul Haque Mani, along with Mani's pregnant wife, Begum Arju Moni, and Bangabandhu's brother-in-law, Abdur Rab Serniabat. Tragically, even Bangabandhu's chief security officer, Colonel Jamil Uddin Ahmad, met the same fate that fateful night.

Sheikh Hasina, now the Prime Minister, and Sheikh Rehana, the two surviving daughters of the Father of the Nation, narrowly escaped the meticulously planned assassination due to their overseas stays.

As a tribute to this solemn occasion, the government has designed comprehensive programs, which include flying the national flag at half-mast across all government, semi-government, and autonomous establishments, as well as educational institutions and Bangladesh's diplomatic missions worldwide.
